Drums lessons at Forte are great fun and extremely popular as we can play as loud as we like here! For children and adults, the drums are probably an instrument that everyone and every musician should try at some point as it gives you essential skills regarding timing and coordination. We can guide you towards grades, or not – if you just want to make some noise! In terms of having your own kit, electronic drum kits are less intrusive and can be used with headphones if an acoustic kit is going to be too loud for home use.

Our drum teachers will get have you playing a recognisable beat from lesson number one! Drum Lessons at the academy are extremely popular, and we can make as much noise as we like here! Below are some frequently asked questions about our lessons.
Grades are not forced upon students as we can teach you without the use of them to achieve your goals. However, all of our teachers can take students through grades all the way to grade 8 and beyond. Grades can be a great way to learn as it gives students something to aim for and we only teach recognised syllabuses such as Rockschool and Trinity. A mixture of the two ways of learning is generally preferred by most but it’s completely up to you.
Initially, a practice pad will be fine which is something to practice your techniques on. But relatively soon on you will need your own kit to be able to practice what the teacher has given you. If noise is an issue an electronic drum kit is a popular option as it can be used with headphones. For advice on what to go for your drum teacher will be able to help to decide.
You will find our prices on the prices section of this website. Most beginners are best off with a half hour lesson initially. All the payment for lessons goes to your designated teacher usually by monthly bank transfer. After your initial lesson, all Lessons are payable a month in advance and your teacher will provide you with a contract with their particular rules on cancellation and payment etc.
For Drums, we generally recommend around 5-6 upwards in terms of children. Although every child is different so this is merely a general guide. The best thing to do is contact us for more details and organise a trial lesson.
It’s never too late to learn! Our oldest student is in their mid 80’s so there’s no excuse not to give it a go!

Forte is based in Derby’s Cathedral Quarter. Our central location makes us easy to get to for anyone looking for Drum lessons in Derby or the surrounding areas. We are the only music school in the centre providing the range of tuition that we do and we have amazing Drum teachers.
